Perfect for fall (or anytime) this fast and easy apple cobbler recipe is only 30 minutes from start to finish and is sure to please the whole family, including the cook!
How to make Fast and Easy Apple Cobbler
The Process:
- Preheat your oven to 425F and put your butter in your pan (a well seasoned 12″ cast iron or 9×13 pan). Put the pan in the oven to allow the butter time to get hot & melted.

2. While the butter is melting in your preheating oven, get the apples prepared by peeling and dicing them. Then put them in a pot with the other ingredients. Put a lid on it if you have one and just let it simmer while you move on to getting the easy cobbler breading together.

3. To make the cobbler breading, simply combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients in a mixing bowl! (Reminder: take the buttered pan out of the oven, it should be hot and melted by now.)
4. Next just pour the cobbler breading batter into your hot pan full of butter! Spread it out with a spoon.
(Don’t be perfectionist about any of this. It’s a forgiving recipe and is meant to be easy, fast apple cobbler without any stress or fuss! )
5. Your apples should be mostly tender by now. Grab a slotted spoon (or any kind with holes in it) and dollop scoops of the fruit all over the cobbler breading you have in the pan.
6. Lastly, I put about 1/4 of the liquid over the dough parts of the cobbler that may not have as much fruit. (Fun tip: if you have lots of extra liquid when you finish save it! The syrup that’s left over goes great on pancakes or to use in your morning coffee as a treat! )

7. Bake that beauty in the oven about 15-20 minutes. Look at it at 15 minutes. It should be a deep golden brown all over when it’s done.
8. Enjoy your easy apple cobbler recipe as it is, or turn it up a notch with ice cream or whipped cream! Either way, it’s sure to be a family favorite.

Apple cobbler is delicious anytime of the year but we especially enjoy it in the fall & winter months. Check out this post where we share 5+ of our favorite, easy fall family traditions that help make cultivate a connected family culture in the fall season.
Notes about the Ingredients:
- Organic All Purpose Flour is what I used for this recipe. However, if you prefer freshly milled whole wheat, you can sub hard white wheat 1 : 1 here or just add extra 1/2 cup of flour for soft white wheat. Also, I’ve used self rising flour for this recipe in the past before I started milling my own grains and using organic flours. If you choose to use self rising, just omit the baking powder and salt in the cobbler breading part of the recipe.
- Organic brown sugar makes a superior cobbler but granulated sugar works well also 1:1 if it’s all you have! Both make a delicious cobbler and I use them both depending on what I have on hand. Please note that if you’d like to cut out some sugar you can omit the sugar completely in the fruit filling and just let the fruit’s flavor shine.
- Buttermilk is a staple in my home cooking but it’s not a necessity when making apple cobbler. Just sub whatever milk you have on hand. I have tried it both ways and both are delicious!
- Salted grass fed butter is preferred in our home for this recipe (think kerrygold quality). But you can use whatever you have (I’ve even used coconut oil before when I was out of butter and though it wasn’t as rich, it was still delicious!)
- Organic Vanilla
- Organic Cinnamon
- Salt: real salt. You can use any salt you have on hand but if you want a bigger nutritional bang of minerals use Redmond real salt or finely ground Celtic salt.
- Baking powder (without aluminum) is what you want. Who knew some baking powders contained aluminum? Just look at the nutrition label under ingredients, you’ll see if it’s in yours or not. Either one will work, but…why eat aluminum if you don’t have to?
- Fruit! For this recipe I used about 6-7 small organic gala apples to get about 4 cups. You can use any fruit you choose to turn this cobbler into any kind of cobbler you’d like! We like to eat with the seasons. You can do apple cobbler for fall, berry cobbler in summer, pear or persimmon in winter (here in KY ). We even had a pumpkin cheesecake version (which I loved) but the family preferred apple cobbler to it. I’d love to hear how you enjoy this old fashioned recipe with your family in the comments!
If you tried this recipe and loved it, I’d love if you come back and give it 5 stars!

- For the fruit filling:
- -4 cups diced, peeled apples
- -splash of vanilla (about 1 tsp)
- -pinch of salt (don't measure, just a little pinch)
- -1/4 cup-1/2cup Sugar (I used brown sugar)
- -splash of water (about 3 or 4 Tablespoons).
- For the Cobbler Breading:
- -1 cup of all purpose flour
- -1 cup brown sugar
- -1 Tablespoon baking powder
- -pinch of salt (1/4tsp)
- -sprinkle of cinnamon (about 1/2 tsp up to 1 tsp)
- -1 cup buttermilk ( or regular milk )
- -1tsp vanilla
- Other:
- -1 stick of butter (1/2 cup) melted in the pan (9 x 13 or 12" well seasoned cast iron )
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425F
- Put butter in your pan of choice (9x13 or 12" well seasoned cast iron skillet) and place in the preheating oven to melt butter & get hot. Check on it and pull it out once it's really hot and melted.
- Peel and dice your apples and add them to a pot on the stove top with the sugar, salt, vanilla, splash of water and cinnamon. Put a lid on if you have it and let it simmer over medium high heat while you prepare the cobbler breading. (check on your butter at this point if you haven't already and pull the pan out of the oven. it should be piping hot by now! )
- In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients for the cobbler breading. Pour batter into the hot buttered pan. Use a spoon to spread it out to the edges of the pan.
- Your apples should be mostly tender by now. Use a slotted spoon (or any spoon with holes) to dollop the apples all over the cobbler breading.
- Scoop about a 1/4 cup of the liquid from the apple out and pour it into the dough places where there may not be any fruit.
- Put the cobbler in the preheated oven to bake for 15-20 minutes. Check it at 15 minutes. It should be golden brown all over when it's done.
- Let it cool for just a couple minutes, slice and serve!
- Enjoy as is or with ice cream or whipped cream!
Notes
- Save the extra liquid from the apples to add to coffees or over pancakes!
- I like to use organic flour but you can swap it for self rising flour for an even faster process. Just remember to omit the baking powder and salt if you use self rising flour.
- If you want to freshly mill your grains you can sub 1 : 1 for hard white wheat or add extra 1/2 cup for soft white wheat.
- Use any fruit you desire just be sure it measures 4 cups and be careful with the liquid! Use only the recommended amount of liquid so your cobbler sets firmly.
- Omit the sugar in the fruit filling if you desire, and let the sweetness of the apples or whatever fruit you choose, shine !
