This is our family’s staple easy homemade hot dog bun recipe that works for more than just buns! As a mama of 5 (soon to be 6) little boys, I need recipes to be quick, simple and versatile. This recipe checks all the boxes when I want to substitute store-bought buns for healthy homemade ones. Come along and I’ll share with you how you can do it in an hour, with 5 littles under foot.

Ingredients you will need:
- 1 cup milk, warmed
- 1/2 cup melted butter, coconut oil, or avocado oil
- 1 cup spring water/filtered water (don’t use tap. chlorinated water can kill your yeast!)
- 3 Tablespoons honey
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 Tablespoons instant dry yeast
- 5 cups All Purpose flour (or if freshly milling use 2 cups hard white wheat berries, 3 cups all purpose flour)
The Process:
Warm milk and fat in a pan until fat is melted.
Combine water, honey, and salt with the warmed milk mixture. Stick your finger in it (or use a thermometer. temp should be between 105-115) it should feel hot but not so hot you can’t hold your finger in. Add the yeast. Watch it bloom or walk about for 3 minutes. It will have a frothy/foam like consistency; this is how you know your yeast is alive & ready to raise your buns!
Combine wet ingredients with the 5 cups of flour. You can do this in your stand mixer with dough hook or by hand with a spoon/dough spoon. Knead for a few minutes in your bowl or in the mixer until dough comes together and starts to clean the sides of your bowl. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes covered in a warm place.
Roll out the dough to 1/2 thickness on a lightly floured surface (add sprinkle of flour as needed to keep it from sticking):

Cut out the dough into equal portions.

Roll each circle into a log/bun shape. Remember these will double in size, so go smaller than you think.

Lay the buns on a parchment lined pan and cover with a towel to rise for about 25-30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375F.

Time to bake! In the oven for about 10 minutes. Internal temp will be 190F+.

How to Make Homemade Hot Dog Buns:
- Warm your milk/melted your fat of choice together. Take it off the heat and add the water. Transfer contents to a mixing bowl. The liquid mixture should be cool enough to hold your finger in.
- Add the honey, salt, yeast. Let it “bloom”. This just means you’ll see foam develop on top of the liquid mixture. This is just a good sign your yeast is alive, active and ready to raise your dough! Add this mixture to your 5 cups of flour and mix with dough hook in your stand mixer or do it like I do and use your dough spoon & hands.
- Let it sit for about 10-15 mins covered to rise.
- Roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness or slightly thicker.
- Use your cup or canning jar/ring or large circle cookie cutter to to help you get a good, consistent amount of dough at a time.
- Roll into little logs. Remember these will double in size, so go smaller than you think!
- Cover and let rise about 25-30 minutes.
- Meanwhile preheat your oven to 375.
- When oven is preheated, put them in and bake about 10 minutes. Use the broil feature on your oven if you want to get a more brown color on your buns.
- On a thermometer they should be about 190+F of adequate doneness in the center.
- Place on a plate and slice about 3/4 of a way.
- Fill with your hot dog Weiner, hot dog chili sauce and favorite toppings!
- Enjoy!
Notes:
I have been learning the value of whole grains and have made this recipe with 1/2 freshly milled hard white wheat. It turned out just as beautiful as the 100% all purpose ones do! Just substitute 1 for 1 hard white wheat berries per cup of flour the recipe calls for. I have only done half whole wheat and half all purpose though. If you experiment with 100% whole wheat on this recipe, I’d love to hear from you in the comments! I’d love to hear feedback from you anyway if you try this recipe! I am so happy you are here!
PRO TIP: reserve 1-2 cups of flour, add those in slowly until the dough comes together nicely. Depending on weather and other factors, your dough may use more or less flour. Reserving 1-2 cups to add in slowly will prevent you from getting too much flour. (Too much flour means dense bred products so you don’t want that!)

Make it a fall family event and let the kiddos (if you have the emotional capacity or someone to help with littles) cook their hot dog weenies over the fire. Top with our family favorite homemade hot dog chili and serve with some sun chips or other chip of choice. We followed it up with roasted marshmallows for dessert! Yum yum family fun!

EASY Home made Hot dog Buns
Ingredients
Method
- 1. Warm Milk, if using butter or coconut oil, melt it in the same pan with the milk. If it gets hotter than 115 just stick it in the fridge to cool a bit so you don't kill the yeast. Stick your finger in it, if it's too hot to keep your finger in, it's too hot for the yeast. Use a thermometer if you doubt to double check (temp somewhere between 105-115 degrees F should be good!)2. Add the melted mixture to a bowl with the 1 cup of water, honey, salt and yeast. 3. Let the yeast "bloom" for a minute. You'll notice the frothy foam forming on top of the water. That's what the yeast "blooming" looks like.4. Add liquid mixture to the 5 cups of flour. Using a dough hook on the mixer or a spoon and begin to bring the dough together. It will be sticky at first. 5. Once dough comes together let it sit for about 10-15 minutes for a quick first rise. 6. Next roll it out to about 1/2" thickness. 7. Using a large mouth jar, cup, cookie cutter or canning ring cut out the pieces of dough and roll into a small log shape. These will Double in size so go smaller than you think. 8. Place on a parchment lined (or well greased) baking sheet (you may need 2 baking sheets to fit them all ). 9. Let them rise about 25-30 minutes. 10. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 375F. After the 25-30 minute wait is up, bake them for about 10 minutes or until the internal temp is about 190+F. 11. Slice with a bread knife 3/4 of the way, careful not to cut into the bottom. 12. Fill your bun with a roasted weenie, chili/sauce, favorite toppings and enjoy!
Notes
- If you don’t have honey, use sugar as a substitute.
- You can freshly mill hard white wheat berries and sub 1:1 what the recipe calls for flour per cup (I have never done more than half freshly milled and half all purpose. If you try 100% whole grain I’d love to know how it turns out!)
- You can freeze as soon as they’re cool enough to touch in a freezer ziplock bag and they’ll last for 3 months or more!
- Experiment and make pizza, flat bread, rolls, hamburger or hoagie buns and cinnamon rolls with this recipe! It’s versatile !
